January 2016
Dear 4th Grade Parents,
The Hawai’i Youth Opera Chorus and the Hawaiian Music Foundation have collaborated to provide an exceptional Hawaiian music educational opportunity for O’ahu fourth grade students and their teachers. Maryknoll School will be contributing to the cost of the program with the balance paid by a grant from the Cooke Foundation.
“E Mele Kakou – Let’s Sing” provides the basics of music through choral music with the exclusive use of Hawaiian literature. The participating students will master important performance and choral basics while focusing on the music and poetry composed by Hawai’i’s ali’i (royalty). This four-week program (11 classes and 1 field trip) includes instruction on music theory, Hawaiian history, hula, and Bel Canto singing technique. This program culminates with a tour of ‘Iolani Palace and a performance with the Royal Hawaiian Band.
The primary objective is to enhance musical and cultural understanding, emphasizing Hawaiian culture and healthy singing techniques. Assessments will be incorporated into their Social Studies and Religion grades. Our 4th graders begin the “E Mele Kakou” program on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. The program’s graduation day will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016, which includes a tour of Iolani Palace and the children’s performance with the Royal Hawaiian Band. Please save this date. More information regarding the events of February 12 will be sent home at a later date.
Sincerely,
The 4th Grade Teachers
